Effective Durations and Scheduling for Weight Loss Fasting
Those who want to use fasting for weight loss will often have two basic, overriding questions when they start out: How long should they fast, and how often? These are questions without easy answers, but if you're willing to consider all the factors and work through it patiently, you'll definitely find the answer that's right for you.
Some general guidelines, however, are applicable to all people, and it's universally useful rules like these that we'll use to show you the right way to fast. And it doesn't matter if you're using water fasting diets, detox fasting, or some other form of fasting... these foundation principles apply to all of it!
There's no mystery behind fasting for those who want to lose weight. It's very intuitive: you stop eating and keep yourself fueled with a minimum of liquids, forcing your body to adjust by burning off fat. However, done improperly it will cause your health to degrade rapidly. And you certainly shouldn't try a fast while maintaining a physically demanding lifestyle!
Thus, fasting is best done by those who can afford to not tire themselves out frequently. If you're on an exercise regimen, you may have to drop it for a little while to fast right. One way to get around this is to fast regularly, but in short periods. By fasting once every two or more days, you can work it into your normal schedule safely. However, while this is excellent for temporary weight loss, it's not always best for long term weight loss.
You need to start by understanding that a fast has to last longer than twelve hours to be effective at losing weight. That's because the body use fat as its first, preferential fuel source. It has to burn through several other sources first, and only by the time twelve hours have passed will it finally start using fat.
Exactly how long you can fast depends in your body type, and how much fat you have stored up. People with more fat will be able to fast for much longer than someone with a skinny, light build. You might be surprised at how long you can last... you're definitely not going to die from just a few days, and in most cases not even from a week or two. Even thirty or forty days isn't out of the question for those prepared for it!
The signal to end your fasting is when you've lost almost all your fat, and your appetite is sharply increasing. This is a message from your body telling you that it needs food soon, because it's almost out of reserves. Obey your body, and give it what it wants. But most of the time, you'll have broken your fast voluntarily far before this ever becomes an issue. So don't be afraid of fasting... it can be your friend, if you're willing to let it be.
